What should I do about being out of work? I can't sleep?
I live in Charleston South Carolina and I looked in the paper and I found 3 job openings. plumber/salesperson/carpenter helper. Keep in mind this is a newspaper that use to have dozens of job openings daily. I called the carpenter position and they already had the job filled in . I’ve been going to a temp service for 3 days thinking I’d at least be able to get a 10 dollars an hour job. Well turns out I can’t even get a job period. I sat in there for 4 hours every day and nothing! The phone doesn’t even ring once in the lobby! I have already exhausted 28 weeks worth of unemployment from Massachusetts which was paying me 540$ per week I’ve since then filed for the extension befits but they require that you first file in your home state(I’m filed out of state because I’ve worked in 7 states and I’m aloud to file where ever I want) And it’s just taking to long for my money to come in. They said it takes along time for out of state wages to be detected by there system and I have to wait . It’s been over a month and I need to find any job I can. I went to the plasma center and waited 5 hours in line just to get 40 dollars I’ve canceled my internet and I’ll be getting rid of my cable. I guess I’ll use bunny ears ! I finally found out that I can get 198$ starting next week but after taxes it would probably only be 140$! I am visiting my mother hear in South Carolina in hopes of landing a decent job but I now thinks it’s a lost cause. I thought for sure I could get a job as a forklift operator and put in 55 or 60 hours for 2 or 3 weeks and then head back home in Pennsylvania with a little bit of money and then try to find a job there. The problem is where I live in Pa it takes time to get a job. and I simply don’t have enough money on hand to pay rent for next month so thats why I drove to south carolina. My mom lets me stay here for free . But now If I can’t get a job theirs no point hanging around her place in sc. I’m now going back to pa and I’m hoping I get called to work as a welder but if I don’t then I’ll have to find a 7-8 dollars hour job to be able to at least keep a roof over my head. Then ,mean while I could draw unemployment benefits but I know if I can’t work now then that means next year when I get layed off around Christmas then I won’t be eligible for unemployment benefits .And who knows how bad the economy will be then! My dad says that if I have to he’ll allow me to come back to his house for free as long as I can offer a helping hand here and there. I tore between the decision. I can draw 400$ of unemployment benefits for another 13 weeks and risk being broke this june and this December when there isn’t any welding construction jobs. or I can work for 280 per week until I get called back to my construction trade . Tough decision huhh? 400 per week for 13weeks or 280$ per week indefinatley and at least know I’m eligible for unemployment in the off season. And now should I give the apartment up? I can afford it if I manage my money but I’m wondering if in the long run if it’s worth keeping the apartment? Yeah sure I could take the 400per week but after 13 weeks I could be starving again and by then the economy could be worse and all the high schoolers will be out there taking the low paying jobs. and then I could lose the apartment anyways. But I could let the apartment go now and work for 280 per week and live at "daddys" . I’ m 24 years old and I never thought I be in this sorry state .
Do you think I should get rid of my apartment it’s only 325 per month and it includes all utilities except electric . My average electric bill in the winter is 65 dollars. so it’s about 360 per month it’s really cheap and it’s a really nice place I love it it! but 280$ per week? I might get called to work and be working for 4-8 weeks of 30Per hour but I can’t be for sure. Any other time I’d be fine but this economy is just really bad. I have never experienced anything like this and honestly I’m scared. I’ve never felt like there could be a possibility that there might not be any work period. I live in a depressed town in Pennsylvania and theres really nothing around even when I work I have to travel out of state sometimes 100′s of miles.
oops I use to live in south Carolina and now I live in Pennsylvania but I’m visiting south Carolina right now!
Sorry I’m tired and I make typos like that when I’m tired!

Dude, I used to be a hotshot now i dont have a job, cant get to sleep either. But unlike you Im optimist, i think that this month ill get one. If you cant do nothing to change the bad things, then stop worrying about it. Restrain yourself until you get a job, if you have to leave your apartment leave it and hang in there. There a few thousands like you out there, but we are hanging in there (we have any other option??). Dont spend a day without going out to see if you can find a job… THE LAST THING YOU LOSE IS HOPE… KEEP IT UP! Also, God gives me the strenght to go from day to day, if you are a non-beleiver maybe its a good time to start great things can happen.

Apply for disability! I mean, sure it won’t help the economy, but really, you need to worry about yourself, I’ll get thumbs down, but I mean…Who accually cares for others and really takes the time to help out others? A very few….
So I mean, just at least apply, and they will help you try to get a job after awhile.

It’s tough.
I went through the last recession like that. All you can do is cut your expenses to the bone. I got my taxi license like about a 1000 other guys did and managed to eke a living out driving a cab.
Best advice is to work for the $280 a week or anything else you can get. This recession will last a lot longer than 13 weeks. Last recession I was competing with 500 other guys even for joe jobs at places like McDonalds.
Being on unemployment benefits is not good for your morale and its not good on your resume. If you can work for $280 then you shouldn’t be drawing benefits even if they give you more money in the short term. Someone has to pay those benefits and when you get older you will resent those who do without good reason.
Best wishes. I’m pulling for you.
