less water use (doesnt need to fill up completely with water to the top) and uses gravity to churn clothes with simpler more energy efficient motors (instead of a powered agitator). More space = more clothes = less loads = saves more energy in the long run. also spins dry the clothes = less time in the dryer = saves energy.
