Can you use a 230 volt european wall oven in the USA on 220V without a converter?
I own a smeg wall oven from europe and would like to wire the oven to a US 220V plug and run conduit from the plug receptical to the breaker box. I am not worried about the digital clock (frequency mismatch) however I am having a hard time finding anyone that talks about major appliance conversions from EU to US.
Thanks
First, first, FIRST – you need to check something before proceeding. You need to make sure that the chassis of the oven is not connected to either one of the 2 power prongs of your oven, AND you need to know if Euro 220 is equipotential from ground. I know Euro is 220, but I don’t know whether one wire is considered a neutral or whether both are either floating or equipotential from ground. Here in the states, household 220 is equipotential from ground/neutral; in other words, both leads are hot. Your oven has to match.
If you can PROVE that neither prong connects to oven chassi anywhere, and that your oven is designed for a 230 that is equipotential from ground, I’m pretty confident you won’t have any problems, including re the clock. Not too many digital clocks were ever built that derived their frequency from the line – maybe perhaps none at all, it’s easier and more accurate to get it from the crystal running the micro. The frequency should not be a problem either – if there is a transformer for the low-power stuff like clock and control, it’ll actually run a little cooler on 60HZ than 50.
