I have a Direct Tv DVR and the picture goes out everytime plug in a appliance. Do anyone have a solution?

I called direct tv to come fix it but the tech did not bother to show up for the appointment.

This would indicate that your electronics are not protected and are getting power feedback from other parts of your house. In order to prevent this and also protect your equipment, you need to purchase at the very least a good quality surge protector. Spend at least $30. If you want to really protect it, purchase a home theater surge protector ($50-$100) that can handle high joules (2000+). If you have a $5000+ home theater system, you may want to invest in a line/power conditioner ($200+). This will not only protect from surges, but also clean your power and improve your audio/video quality as well.

If you go to your local home theater or electronics store, they can show you the differences. This is one of the most common overlooked parts of a home theater. Everyone thinks if you buy an expensive tv, dvd, receiver and speakers, that's it. No, you have to protect your investment from surges, spikes and dirty power.
